I’ve never had an obsession towards the human face (I don’t get “OMG HAWT” faces nor have a certain type of preference), and unless someone has a VERY unique characteristic features, they go zooming out my goldfish memory. After I started seriously drawing, I finally started noticing more details and differences but I still have a hard time keeping it in my head so I think I need to install a near perfect 3D base facial model in my head before I can go Mario 64 on it. That’s my excuse for not being able to fully extend on my character variations. The skin creases, the skull detail, facial muscles and balance is unfathomably complicated and no matter how many real life human faces I dessin, it poofs out of my memory as soon as I finish them.

Excuse my rant, you’re not here to read my complaints about how bad I am at faces, cause obviously I can cover up my inadequacy enough that you’re asking me for hints! Further proving the overall feeling, balance, and attitude is important. I’m only having troubles because of a certain style I’m aiming for but that’s where your aesthetic values shine. I do nothing different than the first tutorial you’ll find after googling “face tutorial”.

Mimicking is seriously your best first step. I believe tracing is fine unless you don’t take credit for it. What you see, which part you’ll put focus on, and most importantly, unless you’re going to dedicate your time to follow every little foot step, HOW you’ll expand from the stepping stones will be different. If you read manga or comics, I’m sure there’s been instances where you prefer one era of the artist’s style than the other (COUGH COUGH BLEACH, X/1999 (CLAMP), HITMAN REBORN, HETALIA COUGH) and I see that as a difference in interests and focuses as an artist. Just promise me not to idolize anything because you’ll take in the flaws as well. Try to fix it to meet your needs, and you’ve already started paving the road towards your own style.

Summer greetings! This heat (57°F/14°C) isn’t on my side at ALL, but I’ve managed to RECOVER!!! WOOOOOOOO!!! I can’t say it’s fully recovered so I have to keep an eye out at least until the climate drops again, but I’m good to draw now! :D Great to be holding my pen again, and I was looking through my folders… and oh god I need to fix a few things on my previous LSD:DEFC pages… woops. I really was in a bad condition <_<;; making some amateur mistakes there, buddy.

Like I said in the comic, I need to do those fixes PLUS I’ll need to catch up on projects and my part time job assignments, then I need to work on comics TO update so I’ll be turning on my engine back on!

Importantly last, THANK YOU FOR ALL OF YOUR KIND MESSAGES. I’m sure it contributed to my recovery, and definitely reminded me to get my shit together real quick >:D so here I am, back earlier than I thought possible! One of my co-workers drew a fan art of my Cateyepillar doodle I left on my desk on a sticky note! I’m not allowed to draw at work so I thought I was going to get a lecture or two but instead, he liked it so much that he decided to give it a shot. :D He even left a scatter of eraser dust around my desk hinting that he sat here for a while trying to get it right.
